Locality

Zemplínska šírava in the past called Zemplínska or Podvihorlatská sąňava, originally called Vihorlatská nádrž, is a water reservoir in eastern Slovakia in the Bodrog basin below Vihorlatské vrchy. It is the second-largest water dam in Slovakia in terms of surface area and at the same time the third largest in Slovakia in terms of total water volume (after Liptovská Mara and Oravská dam). It is a popular tourist destination with seven recreation centers. In addition to recreation, it serves to irrigate the agricultural land of the East Slovak Plain, to protect against floods, and as a water source for industry. The eastern part of the reservoir is a protected area. The water area of Zemplínská širava covers an area of 33 km². Its maximum length is 11 km, maximum width is 3.5 km, average depth is 3.5 m, and maximum depth 14.7 m. The reservoir is formed by 6-8 (max. 12) meter dams 7,346 m long. The water reservoir is mainly fed by the waters of the Laborec river through the inlet, the so-called of the Šíravský channel, the water is diverted by the so-called Zalužice canal (to Laborac), black water also flows from the dam. Šírava has very favorable climatic conditions for swimming, water sports, fishing, cycling, and hiking in the surrounding Vihorlat Hills. Vacationers seek out Širava to ride jet skis, yachts, or pedal boats.
